With an ageing population and increasing life span, more and more of us are waking up to the fact that we need to stay fitter for longer. Indeed, exercise can be the key to a prolonged and happy life. Incredibly, that said, only one in four people aged between 65 and 75 exercise regularly.
Not so for our all-age membership at The Health Club at Low Wood Bay. Some are happy to scamper up the height of the tallest mountain in England on a regular basis. Others love to be pushed to the max in our monthly high octane, cardio pumping MYZONE challenge. However, this isn’t required (and isn’t always possible!) to ensure a healthy lifestyle.
Our new Young at Heart class, part of our new Class Timetable, is tailored around those that are committed to pursuing an active, healthy programme of fitness. Here are five reasons to get signed up…
Weakness in limbs and poor balance can be a symptom of ageing. This is more likely if you remain inactive. Regular exercise strengthens muscles and limbs which helps to maintain balance, and reduces the risk of falls.
Staying active keeps the body more flexible. As we age, bones become more brittle and muscles shorten. Gentle exercise has been shown to increase bone density, lengthen and strengthen muscles and increase movement.
Remember the heart is a muscle too. It needs to be kept in shape. Even low impact exercise will increase heart rate and improve fitness. As well as many other benefits, a healthy heart can improve our immune system helping to ward off colds and flu.
Exercise releases those natural endorphins which lifts our mood. This helps to improve mental focus and generally have a positive outlook on life. Who doesn’t need that!
A healthy lifestyle is also about social wellbeing. Low Wood Bay Health Club is like a growing family, but without the squabbles! There’s lots of laughter, camaraderie and reasons to have a coffee together after the class.
… and did we mention our lovely instructors, Emma, Mel and Jade?
