Low Wood Watersports – Calum’s Top Tips for Would-be Wakeboarders

Wednesday, August 9, 2017 by admin

Meet Calum Visser, Low Wood Bay Watersports Instructor. Calum has been Wakeboarding for around five years and takes part in events and competitions around the country.

This has allowed him to improve his technique and experience Wakeboarding in a variety of different locations. Calum loves the opportunity to share his passion and knowledge of wakeboarding with visitors to Low Wood Bay. We asked him to share some advice for those of us who were thinking of taking up the sport.

Here are a few of my top tips for first-time wakeboarders:
  1. Stay close to the board at first – tuck up tight and keep your knees together.
  2. Let the boat do all the work – don’t try to fight it.
  3. Don’t pull on the rope – even if it feels like you should!
  4. Take your time – it’s not a race to get out the water!
  5. Stand tall – it makes it easier to ride for longer.
  6. Keep the handle low to your hip – this will help your stance.
  7. Don’t be afraid to fall – everyone does at some point!
  8. Look up – it’s easier if you are looking in the direction you’re heading.
  9. Don’t be afraid to push yourself once you’re up – it’s a quick progression and you’ll be doing tricks in no time!
  10.  Have fun – it’s an addictive sport which should be enjoyable!

Calum took Jess and Carlos, visitors to the Lake District, out for a lesson. Here’s a peak at their time on the lake.

Jess said …

“We had a fantastic time on the lake, with beautiful surroundings and really helpful instruction. This was my first wakeboarding lesson and, with Calum’s help and encouragement, I managed to get up on top of the water in no time”.
