“We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea, whether it is to sail or to watch – we are going back from whence we came”
John F Kennedy
For millennia, sailing has been a profession, sport, hobby, a way of life. Whether you’re out on Lake Windermere to relax, or competing at high speeds against other boats, sailing can be a great activity for both your health and fitness.
Being a good sailor is not about being the strongest, or the fittest, or the lightest. Sailing is about the boat. Self-tacking jibs and roller-furling mains alleviate the physical work of sailing. If that does not sell it, did you know of Harry Heckel who, at the age of 89, became the oldest man to circumnavigate the world in a sailboat?
At Low Wood Bay Watersports Centre, RYA sailing courses are available from the age of 16, making way for the next generation of sailors.
Perhaps you thrive in a social setting, or flourish alone. Whatever the setting, sailing can complement your disposition. On any given day, you can be a part of a crew, sharing the exhilaration among friends, deepening the sense of camaraderie and trust. But maybe solitude appeals to you, the opportunity to go out by yourself for a bit of peace and quiet.
There is no greater serenity than the feel of the wind in your hair and the water beneath you. What better way to escape the noise, confusion and stress of the world than to spend a day exploring Lake Windermere, against the backdrop of the Lakeland fells.
Sailing will give you confidence in your abilities, help your focus, and empower you to conquer anxiety, frustration and discouragement.
As the name suggests, the Lake District offers an abundance of Lakes to sail, Bassenthwaite and Coniston to name a few, but none as great as Lake Windermere. With its sprawling size and many islands, exploring Lake Windermere is a great day out.
You don’t have to own a boat, or know someone who does, there a plenty of available venues to hire a boat, be it for an hour or a day.
Sometimes it can be nerve-wracking to try something new. The unfamiliar makes us nervous and all too often do we let the fear of the unknown stop us. But pushing ourselves out of our comfort zone allows us to expand our mind and learn – both about new things and ourselves.
Our friendly team at Low Wood Bay Watersports Centre will be more than happy to help you on your journey to become an excellent sailor.
