Matt Conway is one of our popular and enthusiastic Fitness Instructors at the Health Club at Low Wood Bay. He has worked at the Club since 2012 and he tells us how it sparked a passion for the sport and exercise industry...
When joining The Low Wood Bay health club team in 2012, I had no experience of fitness and exercise. Low Wood Bay gave me the opportunity to gain lots of qualifications and some excellent experience. This is where I realised that sport and exercise was the industry for me.
Wide range of indoor and outdoor classes at Low Wood Bay
In 2016, with my interest in sports related conditioning, I enrolled onto a Sport Science degree at the University of Central Lancashire. If you want to work in elite sport, a sport science undergraduate degree is essential. The three core disciples on the course are Physiology, Psychology and Biomechanics. Having completed my Level 3 in Personal Training whilst working at the Health Club at Low Wood Bay, I had a head start in some modules.
I was fortunate to be chosen for a summer internship at Bury Football Club, working within their academy and their Sports Science and Medicine team. This was invaluable experience. My role includes leading warm ups, assisting in gym sessions, fitness testing and programming. As well as that I helped out with the physiotherapist and sports therapist injury prevention. Every day I’m learning new skills from colleagues who really know their stuff about the industry and have plenty of experience working in sport.
I’m around the Club for a while yet, but my final year is fast approaching. I’m considering a post gradual Master’s degree for September 2019, but also considering physiotherapy for the future.
