English Lakes Director Swims 22 Miles for Diabetes UK

‘Fixing Dad’ is a moving story of two brothers committed to supporting their Dad, Geoff Whittington, turn his life around from Type 2 diabetes. Overhauling his diet and introducing  a robust exercise regime (which at first he stubbornly resists) eventually paid dividends. He is now a fighting fit endurance cyclist.

English Lakes are proud to have our very own hero going the distance to raise awareness of diabetes. Earlier in the year, Douglas Dale, Operations Director at English Lakes took the Diabetes UK Swim22 challenge – to swim the distance of the English Channel, 22 miles, in a set period of time.

The Lake District’s Vital and Compassionate WWII Contribution

There is much of interest for visitors to The Lake District from outdoor pursuits, gastronomic delights, music and the arts and traditional Lakeland Sports. If you enjoy history, there are two exhibitions that explain how the local area was transformed to bolster the war effort and subsequently, to welcome survivors of the holocaust for much needed rest and recuperation.

A Walk Around the Historic City of Lancaster

For those enjoying a weekend break at Lancaster House Hotel, you don’t have to go far to explore the rich history that forms the character of this royal city.

The Romans built a fort in the first Century AD situated above the River Lon, or Lune. The word for fort ‘castra’ became ‘ceaster’ in Anglo Saxon, so the fort became ‘Lonceaster’, and eventually Lancaster. Here are five historic landmarks to get you started. If anybody can give advice about how to improve your open water swimming performance it is Cassie Patten! Olympic medallist and winner of the inaugural Great North Swim in 2008, Cassie has encouraged thousands of us to dive in and have a go.
