Waterhead’s Gin of the Month – Ophir Festive Gin

During the month of December, Waterhead will be serving a Festive Gin and Tonic using a carefully selected season-perfect gin taken from the expanding gin library at the hotel.

The gin that we are featuring to accompany us into the cosy Christmas season is Ophir (pronounced ‘O-Peer’). An oriental-spiced gin, it marries perfectly with the seasonal garnishes associated with this time of year – fresh juniper berries, cloves, pink peppercorns, fresh orange peel or cinnamon.

The tonic and mixer is just as important and we’ve chosen to serve Fever-Tree Indian tonic which effortlessly complements our festive G & T. For the slightly more adventurous, Fever-Tree Ginger Ale would also be a great choice and add even more spice.

A Trail of Exotic Spices

The rich heritage around Ophir is rooted in the ancient spice route where, for centuries, merchants from around the world would travel thousands of miles to discover and trade exotic spices.

Botanicals from around the world

Opihr Oriental Spiced Gin is crafted with a selection of exotic hand-picked botanicals – spicy Cubeb berries from Indonesia, Black Pepper from India, Coriander from Morocco and Orange peel from Spain to name just a few. Finding their way to the oldest distillery in England, they are blended with a fine English spirit to produce an exotic oriental spiced gin.

Ophir Tasting Notes

Opihr Oriental Spiced Gin has bursts of Citrus balanced with the rich, earthy aromas and a soft spice, epitomising the exotic intensity of the Orient, awakening the senses to a new style of gin.

  • Nose: A rich oriental spiced gin with a smooth perfume and sharp bursts of citrus. Key notes of cumin and cardamom provide a warm earthy background balanced with the grapefruit peel.
  • Taste: Soft camphor, some sweetness and oriental spices create a warm mouth feel that lingers but does not increase in intensity.
  • Finish: Long length with soft cracked black pepper and spice.
