Malt of the Month – Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky

The Wild Boar stocks an impressive collection of over 110 whiskies from all over the world. This month our Master of Malt, George, ventures to South Africa for the first time and discovers a very pleasing single grain whisky.

As the Rugby World Cup is starting on the 18th September 2015, this month we are going a little further afield and heading for South Africa. We are also going for a single grain whisky rather than a single malt.

Bainskloof Pass is one of South Africa’s most picturesque regions with magnificent peaks, wooded valleys and cool, sparkling streams and it lends its name to our Whisky of the Month.

Finest South African grain is used to create this elegant premium whisky. Double matured in specially selected first-fill bourbon casks, after the initial three year’s maturation, the whisky is moved to a second set of bourbon casks to age for a further two years.

This whisky showcases South Africa’s ability to produce a premium, specialist whisky of an award-winning international standard while reflecting a unique taste of place. All stages of the process from raw material selection through to the final bottling take place in South Africa, making it a proudly South African whisky.

Jeff Green is the company’s dedicated distiller and he uses his love of science and background in biochemistry to produce the distinctive flavour of this, South Africa’s first and only 100% single grain whisky.  The Leopards on the crest represent the Cape Mountain Leopards, which have roamed the Bainskloof Pass area since time began. Regal and agile, these reclusive predators keep to the steep, inaccessible slopes of the rugged mountains.

Nose: Combination of toffee, floral and vanilla aromas

Palate: A hint of spice softened by the sweet undertones of oak.

Finish: A warm and extended mouth-feel with an exceptionally smooth finish.

Food Pairings: Well complemented by spicy foods and sweet-chilli cashew nuts
