Inspiring Art – The Gondola Sails for Home

Waterhead enjoys a close link with local artists in our community. For the next few months we are hosting a work by Mike Labrum entitled, ‘Evening, The Gondola Sails for Home’.

It was evening by Coniston Water and the gondola was setting off back to its night mooring. I loved the warm light and especially the way the pale smoke contrasted with the darkening hillside. Back home I made my oil painting on canvas, attempting to produce a work that was a response to how I felt about the scene rather than a ‘photographic’ image.

coniston artMike went to South West Essex School of Art in the ’60s at a time when such places still encouraged students to produce Art, ie before one was thrown out for drawing or painting … a time when unmade beds were kept well out of the public eye!

After teaching for 7 years in London and then Penrith, Mike dropped out and became a potter, working at Wetheriggs Pottery before going on to do a two year ceramics course at Cumbria College of Art. He then set up his own pottery in Ambleside. After joining Ambleside Art Society around 23 years ago, Mike’s original love of painting took over again and he has painted full time for the last ten years.┬áIf you recognise Mike’s face from his self portrait, it may be that you saw him on Channel 4s Watercolour Challenge in 1998.

Mike enjoys painting all sorts of subjects, especially landscape and portraits. He very much believes in working from life wherever possible and his painting often have an impressionist quality.
