Open Water Swimming – It’s good for you!

Low Wood Bay is hosting the Big Chill Swim Windermere which will take place over the weekend of 30th January – 1st February. It would seem that open water swimming is the new hot (or should I say cold!) trend.

The Outdoor Swimming Society reports a 77% increase in membership since 2006 and growing by around 9 members daily. They list details of 940 outdoor places to swim in England – the fact that it’s a long list is probably not surprising since it is said that wherever you are in the UK you are not more than 70 miles from the sea, not to mention the many and varied lakes and rivers! 8 Creative Wedding Favour Ideas

Wedding favours give the bride and groom the opportunity to thank their friends and family for sharing in their big day. This gesture is steeped in centuries-old tradition originating in Europe in the 1300s. French aristocracy would give their wedding guests ‘bonbonniers’ – sugared treats in a small trinket box made of crystal or precious stones. At that time sugar was a luxurious delicacy, difficult to source and therefore very expensive. As time went on bonbonniers were succeeded by five sugar coated almonds representing fertility, wealth, longevity, health and happiness. As sugar became more accessible wedding favours spread to all levels of society. Nowadays there is no limit to the scope of creativity that brides and grooms bring to the table to say ‘thank you’ to their guests. Here are a few of the Low Wood Bay wedding team’s favourites. Waterhead Hotel

Waterhead Hotel

Having tried lots of places over the years Waterhead remains our favourite. It’s a luxurious break without the guess work of whether the bed will be comfy or the quality of food and wine or if the staff are friendly.  I’m quite fussy and like a quiet room, thick curtains and a powerful shower. Add to this a stunning view, fluffy towels and bathrobes, a library of DVDs, gingerbread and freshly roasted coffee! All of this adds up to a really relaxing break and that is why we keep coming back.

We love just parking the car when we arrive and then ignoring it for the duration of our stay. Here are out top five picks for car-free outings from Waterhead:

Our own Dr Doolittle … Raf with a Bluetit

One of my hobbies outside of work is Photography especially landscape, Wildlife/Nature and Travel. This started at an early age spending a lot of time in the Lake District as a child. My craving for the outdoor lifestyle later led me to becoming a Snowboard Instructor and I travelled for many years to stunning countries all over the world, from Japan, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Switzerland, France to name just a few. Along my travels my trusty point and shoot camera was always to hand to document and share my experiences by capturing many of the sights I had seen.
