Low Wood No Wood Cardboard Boat Race 2014 in Video & Pictures

The second Low Wood No Wood Cardboard Boat Race took place on 17th May 2014. In partnership with Low Wood Bay and Progression Solicitors the event raised £3,845 in aid of the Lake District Calvert Trust.

Boats made entirely of cardboard, of all shapes, sizes and design, held together by duct tape took to the water at Low Wood Bay’s Watersports Centre on a sunny 17th May 2014. The vessels followed a 100m course to complete a time trial and then competed in the ‘armada’ finale race.

This year the teams faced a storm (water cannons) and a sea monster (a professional flyboarder) which ultimately resulted in carnage on the seas.

We made sure each Cardboad Boat was tested to breaking point with water cannons and jets.

After the event we caught up with Lakes Christian Centre’s youth group who won the Best Youth Team award with their creative boat ‘The Ark’.

Julie said “The Ark was built over a period of a month – we spent hours taping and overlapping cardboard and then painting the whole thing to look like a wooden ark. We were amazed to see it actually float! Noah would have been proud of us!”

“The demolition derby at the end was the best bit – and then to win Best youth team was awesome – we are already thinking about next year!”
