Our Tenth Christmas at Waterhead

We have many regular guests who we welcome each year for our festive packages at English Lakes. Mr Peck a regular guest at Waterhead shares with us why he keeps returning…

Christmas 2004 proved a bit of a turning point for my wife and I. For years we had enjoyed a traditional family Christmas at our daughter’s house, but that year building works at her home meant that we had to re-think our plans for over the festive season.

Our initial attraction to Waterhead was that during the Christmas package they did not encourage children under the age of 16. This appealed, not because we dislike children (we have 11 lovely grandchildren!) but it provided a quiet, relaxed break for my wife and myself.

Ten years later we have a whole host of other reasons for returning to Waterhead every Christmas. For a start, as my wife will confirm, I like my food! Without fail, the meals provided at Waterhead are plenteous and delicious. From the welcome glass of mulled wine and festive nibbles on arrival to the 6-course Christmas lunch and evening buffet – it would be vastly understating it to say that we have never gone hungry!

We love the warm atmosphere at Waterhead over Christmas and although the rooms and surroundings are beautiful, it is the welcome we receive from the team that creates this sense of belonging. As soon as we walk in, everybody remembers us and greets us like friends, from the housekeepers and receptionists to Stephen in the restaurant who remembers our favourite tipple and even named our preferred wine choice from twelve months ago!

This year was extra special as Mark, the General Manager, personally greeted us, carried our bags from the car and showed us to our room. To our amazement and delight – the team had prepared our room with a 6ft Christmas tree with lights, champagne, chocolates and flowers and a lovely card to celebrate our tenth Christmas at Waterhead.

Needless to say we had another great time over the next few days. There’s no pressure to join in all the activities, and these days neither of us walk too far but we thoroughly enjoyed the Mad Hatters Tea Party with entertainment from magician, David Lancaster, who bamboozled us with some amazing and clever tricks!

Thank you to all the team at Waterhead – see you next year!
