A small selection of polllinating benches at Barnhaven
Have you a passion for primroses? Florence Bellis, founder of Barnhaven Primulas, had a dream of pure colour and perfect form. In 1929 she used a ‘leaky old barn’ to realise her dream – “it was a haven and when I crossed the creek and stepped into the lane, I had a strange feeling of destiny”. Barnhaven Primulas was born and eighty four years later, a move from Oregan, USA to our doorstep in Cumbria, 400 species and thousands of varieties later, Florence’s method of hand pollination is still used in the same way today.

Barnhaven’s hallmark is a triad of colour, lilting grace, with overtones of fragrance

Bob Sanderson, well known speaker and RHS Gold medal winner will be telling us more about the story behind these special primulas which survive through our ever changing weather conditions, often flowering right through the autumn months. With over forty years practical experience in horticulture Bob will also be offering a ‘Gardeners Question Time’ on 17th March 2013 as part of Storrs Hall Gardening Lunch.
Set in beautiful gardens overlooking Lake Windermere, you will enjoy a gourmet lunch before Bob’s entertaining and informative talk. To make the most of the afternoon and to resolve your horticultural questions, bring along a sample of a problem shrub or write down your question and bring it along on the day.
