Vintage Morecambe

Vintage seems to be the buzz word in fashion and design and with the Queen’s Jubilee upon us I’m getting in to the street party spirit and adorning my place of work, The Midland with bunting for the Bank Holiday weekend.

Being from the seaside town of Morecambe I am nostalgic to the idea of the fun filled UK seaside holidays of the past, and (not at all brought about from my fear of flying) I am determined to see this sleepy seaside town brought back to the splendour of its heyday. Listening to tales of Morecambe’s history and seeing images and footage adds fuel to my fire and even if it means being very British standing under a brolly on a rainy promenade, ice cream in hand, we owe it to the town (and to our bank balances) to bring to the seaside holiday back.

With the vintage trend being ever more appreciated it seems more and more people are starting to catch on to the style of days gone by, because let’s face it its gone downhill since the 80s. I was delighted to attend Gold Dust Productions first Variety Festival in Morecambe last month. Dressed in vintage finery to watch burlesque and cabaret acts in a box at The Winter Gardens with a glass of champagne, may have been one of the highlights of 2012 for me even if the lack of heating did make my teeth chatter! Over 2000 people passed through the doors of the theatre that weekend and it seems that in Morecambe, we have unearthed a community of those with a fondness for vintage and I for one am thrilled to be a part of it and long may it continue.

Capturing my passion of 50s style is thirsty work so imagine my delight when my Mum became the proud owner of Dotty’s Vintage boutique and tea room; tea and fashion all under one roof, who could ask for more?! The shop is like a home from home and it’s easy to lose track of time listening to tales of times gone by while sipping tea from china and finding vintage gems to send to loving new homes.

As a Morecambrian, I eagerly followed the renovation of The Midland knowing, not only how important it would be for the town, but how exciting it would be to sip cocktails dressed to the nines like the dandies of the day. My expectations were surpassed when I first stepped foot in the hotel so much so that I am the Wedding and Events Co-Ordinator at this art deco gem. To say I’m excited to be organising a vintage day on Jubilee Bank Holiday Monday here is the understatement of the century! I can’t wait to spend the day with like-minded people enjoying the hotel and vintage splendour just as much as I do.
