It seemed like winter came late this year and with snowfall here in the Lake District in January it kicked of our 2012 Winter Photography competition. Like previous competitions we ran it over on our Facebook page and invited anyone to submit their recent snaps of both the Lakes and North Lancashire for the chance to win a Luxury English Lakes break.
We selected Martin Smith from Dalton-in-Furness as the winner of our Winter Competition because his photograph was so unique it stood out from all the other entries we received. It showcases the golden sun we often see over the Lake District when it is low in the sky in winter. The detail of the silhouettes in the foreground and the layering of light in the background as it hits the mist lingering close to the distant landscape makes for a really interesting photograph.
Martin explains “it was taken early evening just after Christmas, from Underbarrow Road, near Kendal. I had been out all day around the Lakes, as the mist and fog had been hanging in the morning, and continued to do so throughout the day – the kind of day when a little climbing allows for some breathtaking views in the Lakes.
I was heading for a final jaunt up Gummers How to catch the last of the evening light, when dropping down the hill to Underbarrow I came across what was to be the photograph attached. The setting sun cast an amazing orange glow through the mist, picking out it’s various shapes, with the trees and farm building silhouetted against it. A precarious pull into the side of the road and I was able to capture it “
Martin has won a luxury Lake District stay in one of our Lake District or Lancashire 4 star hotels. To ensure you don’t miss out on our next competition make sure you like English Lakes on Facebook.
